Rec Softball FAQs

What is the registration window for spring softball?
Registration for the spring season runs Nov. 1 – Dec. 31, 2023. Late registration will be available Jan. 1, 2024 until rosters are full.

How long does the season run?
Teams will be formed in late-January and most will begin pre-season practices in February. Games begin on Saturday, March 2 following Opening Ceremonies. All teams will compete through May 4, 2024. Those who make the playoffs will have additional games the following week. The season will come to a close with Championship Saturday on May 11, 2024.

What is the time commitment for players?
The frequency of practices varies according to age division and coach. On average, our 8U, 10U, 12U, and 14U divisions practice 1-2 times per week. Our 6U teams usually stop holding formal practices once games begin. All divisions will have two games a week, typically one on a weekday and one on the weekend.

Can my child be on the same team as her friend?
Our player agents do their best to honor buddy requests for the 6U and 8U divisions, but there is no guarantee. Teams for our older divisions (10U-14U) are decided through a draft process. Coaches may take buddy requests into consideration, but they are not required to honor them.

Is there a tryout? How do I know my player will make the team?
WVS holds evaluations for our older divisions (10U-14U). These are not tryouts, but rather a way for our coaches to assess players’ skill levels. Every girl who attends an evaluation will be placed on a team.

What age group is appropriate for my player?
Divisions are determined by your child’s age on Sept. 1, 2023. Please use her age on that date as a guide for registration.

Age on Sept. 1, 2023 Division
13 or 14 14U
11 or 12 12U
9 or 10 10U
7 or 8 8U
4 - 6  6U

If you have further questions or have a special request regarding your child’s age division, please contact our chief player agent, David Ordonez at chiefplayeragent@wvslammers.com.

What equipment do players need?
All players should have cleats (no metal spikes), black softball pants, a softball glove, a bat, and a helmet with a face guard. We also highly recommend players wear protective fielding masks.

Are you looking for coaches?
Yes! We’re always looking for parents who want to get involved. Please indicate your interest during the registration process or reach out to our Chief Player Agent David Ordonez at chiefplayeragent@wvslammers.com.

Does the league have paid staff?
No. West Valley Slammers is run exclusively with the support of volunteers.

Is there a volunteer requirement?
Yes. Our league is entirely volunteer-run. We require each family who is not currently serving as a head coach, rostered assistant coach, team manager, or board member to fulfill six (6) league-approved volunteer hours. Volunteer opportunities include the Snack Shack, field maintenance, umpiring for our younger divisions, etc. If your family chooses not to contribute volunteer hours, a buy-out of $400 per player is required. Learn more in the Volunteer Requirement FAQs.

My player is interested in more competitive play. Are there any options?
Yes. West Valley Slammers offers a B-Select program for players in the 10U and 12U divisions. In the spring and summer of 2024, West Valley Slammers will also offer A Classified Tournament Teams in the 12U and 14U divisions.

How much does the rec season cost?
The registration fee for the spring season is $360. All players will receive a game uniform jersey.
